  Life in the Central Valley

The greater Fresno metropolitan area is nestled in the heart of the San Joaquin valley, the agriculturally-rich center of California.  Despite its reputation as one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, Fresno maintains its small-town feel, with minimal traffic and an easy friendliness.  However, as the 5th largest city in California with over 700,000 residents, Fresno still has the advantages of a large city with its cultural diversity, museums, concerts ranging from opera to rock, triple-A baseball, and NCAA sports.  There are multiple suburbs and smaller communities in the outlying areas from which to choose a home; all are within easy reach of shopping, entertainment, and outdoor recreation..

The Fresno metropolitan area is well-known for its affordability and for its good housing values.  There are a wide variety of excellent educational choices, ranging from public, to private, to charter schools.  The Fresno area is also home to three community colleges and two universities, California State University Fresno and Fresno Pacific University.

The weather is usually sunny, with over 200 clear days each year. Summers are typically hot and dry, while winters are mild and rainy.  The average temperature in January is 39.6° F, and 93.1° F in August, and the spring and fall seasons are remarkable.

  Outdoor Recreation

A tempting array of outdoor activities are within easy reach for Fresno residents.  There are seven lakes, multiples reservoirs, and two major rivers for fishing, boating, and outdoor recreation.  Three stunning national parks, Yosemite, Kings Canyon, and Sequoia, are a short distance away for hiking, camping, or just enjoying the majesty.  There are also three ski resorts nearby for winter sports enthusiasts.

Just an hour’s drive takes Fresno residents to the beautiful Sierra Nevada mountain range and in a few hours, you can find yourself in San Francisco, the Central Coast, or Southern California.

With two major railroads, extensive freeways, an international airport and several smaller airparks, the Greater Fresno area (centrally located between Los Angeles and Sacramento) is a transportation hub for Central California.

  Arts and Entertainment

Fresno has a thriving arts and entertainment scene, which only grows stronger each year.  The Save Mart Center and Selland arena host world-class acts and family-friendly shows.  The Saroyan Theater is home to the Fresno Philharmonic and hosts many other cultural events.  Warnors Theater in downtown Fresno, is a mix of Moorish, Spanish, and Italian renaissance architecture and has hosted 80 years of musical and theatrical productions.

Fresno has had a bit of a shopping renaissance of late, with Fig Garden Village, Sierra Vista Mall, and Fashion Fair Mall all having undergone major renovations to add even more stores from Banana Republic to Pottery Barn to Urban Outfitters.  Antiques and treasure hunters will enjoy Old Town Clovis and the Tower District and their many shops in which to browse.

Downtown Fresno is home to the Fresno Grizzlies, the triple A farm team for the San Francisco Giants.  Their summer games at Chuckchansi Park are a wonderful way to spend an evening with the family.  California State University, Fresno (commonly known as Fresno State) has a nationally-recognized football team and the 2008 College World Series Champion baseball team.
